Tools/Parts Needed To Repair Concrete Cracks - Part 1

A concrete crack repair blade is one of the tools that you will need to repair concrete cracks not only on your reinforced concrete roof but also on columns, floor beams or floor slabs.  Preparing the concrete surface prior to applying the repair mortar involves cutting back the parent concrete until you can put your finger between the steel reinforcement bars and the parent concrete.  It is not easy when doing it manually.  You need to do it with a mechanical tool that uses a concrete crack repair blade as shown on your left.  The product weighs one pound with a length of 6 inches and a width of 0.375 inch.  The part is numbered D22403.  This crack repair blade is made to set new performance standards.  It is used for a wide range of cured concrete.  The manufacturer has secured the patented Z-Triangle arbor on the blade that prevents the blade from turning and the arbor eliminates the need to replace expensive spindle shafts.

For steel surface preparation, you might also want to get yourself a electric grinder or polisher to clean the rust from the corroded steel reinforcement bars.  It weighs 8.5 lbs, 19.5 inch long, 8.3 inch wide and 4.9 inch high.  The heavy duty DEWALT DW849 12-amp 7/9-inch right-angle polisher performs smoothly and consistently with heat-treated, precision-cut gears and powerful all-ball bearing motor.

Features of the grinder/polisher:

  • Powerful 8 amp, all-ball-bearing motor for long life
  • Electronic module maintains specified speed even under load
  • Conveniently located variable-speed dial lets user set maximum speed, from 1,000 to 3,000, for different materials and applications
  • Variable-speed trigger allows user to instantly control speed from 0 to dialed setting
  • Heat-treated, precision-cut gears for smooth operation
  • External brush caps for easy servicing
  • Spindle lock for easy pad changing
Specifications:
  • Amps: 8 AC amps
  • Max. watts out: 1,400 watts
  • No-load speed: 0 to 1,000 / 0 to 3,000 rpm
  • Spindle thread: 5/8-inch-11
  • Spindle lock: yes
  • Tool length: 17.3 inches
  • Tool weight: 8.25 lbs.
Includes:
  • 2-position side handle
  • Rubber backing pad
  • Clamp nut

This DeWalt high-performance industrial tool comes with a 30-day no-risk satisfaction guarantee, one year free service contract and one year warranty.

Best-Selling Book Report On Causes, Evaluation & Repair Of Concrete Cracks In Concrete

Amazon best-selling book report on getting good long-term results by American Concrete Institute.  Get it to find out how homeowners can carry out concrete crack repairs successfully without spending too much money.
In summary, the book report aims to help homeowners or practitioners to find the best solution by discussing on;
a)  the causes of cracks in concrete structures,
b)  the importance of evaluating the extent and causes of the concrete cracks
c)  the methods of repair and techniques to repair concrete cracks

The book report explained further by stating that;
  • there are various causes of cracks in concrete,
  • cracks in concrete can affect the appearance of concrete structures,
  • cracks indicate structural distress in concrete structures or a lack of durability in concrete structures,
  • cracks also point out the total extent of the damage, and
  • cracks may lead to other bigger problems in concrete structures
The book report stated that building owners should seriously take note of the cracks depending on the type of structure or building they own and the characteristics of cracks.

After reading this book report, the homeowner can select the proper method of repair that can give good long term result.  The reason is because the selection is done based on the findings of the causes and extent of cracks.

Without proper evaluation, the book report stated that the repair will be just cosmetic repair and the results will not last long.

It also suggested that most cases may need a combination of methods to fully rectify the problem.

What Is Steel Surface Preparation?

Some of you may be wondering what steel surface preparation is and why it is important in concrete roof repairs.  It was briefly described in my previous post as cleaning the rusted steel reinforcement bars.  Steel surface preparation is related to cleaning of rusted steel reinforcement bars.

It is important to do clean them thoroughly and all around the circumference of the bars without leaving any rust.  The surface area behind the rusted bars is often overlooked in concrete roof repairs.  This is one of the factors that contributes to concrete cracks and concrete spalling after a few months of completing the concrete roof repair.

The steel reinforcement bars need to be cleaned so that the next treatment or concrete repair product can bond well with the bars including their whole circumference and the parent concrete behind the bars.  Proper cleaning prevents concrete spalling in future.

Cleaning of steel reinforcement bars manually takes time when the area of concrete roof repair is large.  Another option is to clean these corroded bars using mechanical equipments.

What Is The Next Treatment After Steel And Concrete Surface Preparation?

A new piece of cloth sewn to patch a hole in dress or shirt usually shrinks. Similarly, a new concrete will not stick well to the parent or existing concrete. But let that not stop you from carrying out the next step in concrete roof repairs.

The market is flooded but not yet saturated with various products to make the new concrete or concrete repair material stick well onto the parent concrete and steel reinforcement bars.  One good tip is to choose a cementitious bonding product or agent. Such products do not have any time limitation in application. You do not have to rush or worry about re-application after the products are dried up.

Another tip is to choose a cementitious bonding agent that can be applied both to concrete and steel surfaces because it can save you time and cost. After applying this bonding agent, you can proceed to applying the concrete repair product. The cementitious bonding agent must be applied to the whole circumference of the steel reinforcement bars and the concrete surface behind these bars.

A concrete repair product is used to replace the removed cracked concrete. If budget is limited, new concrete can be used instead. But it is not advisable because the end result is only for short term only.

Get Good Tips in Concrete Surface Preparation Including Steel Surface

Hi everyone!  I just can't wait to share the next tip on getting long term results of concrete roof repairs! This tip is useful in repair of concrete roof that is damaged by corrosion of steel reinforcement bars.

The key is to prevent water leakage i.e. no water seepage in concrete roof. First, you need to remove all loose cracked concrete from the underside of the concrete roof slab. Remove them until reaching the hard good concrete including those behind the steel reinforcement bars.

Then clean the steel reinforcement bars from rust until they become bright. It can be done using a wire-brush or using mechanical tools. Take note to clean the whole circumference of the steel reinforcement bars. But if the cleaned bars have lost more than 10% of the cross-sectional area of bars, it is better to replace with new steel reinforcement bars.

Lapping of new steel reinforcement bars with existing steel reinforcement bars is a better choice than welding. Welding uses heat and may cause fire if not done according to good standard practice.

After that, clean the parent concrete and steel reinforcement bars from dirt and all debris using high pressure water jet. Now the concrete and steel reinforcement bars are ready to receive the next treatment in concrete roof repairs.

What Is The Importance Of Roof Leaks Repairs?

Roof leaks repairs are usually done mainly to prevent water leakages on the roof and can enter your house or building.  Roofing materials can be in small pieces or sheets.  When put together to form the roof for your house, gaps between the pieces or sheets can formed over years after being exposed to the changing weather.

Concrete roof casted monolithically on site does not have the problem of gaps on its surface.  Instead, concrete roof has voids when it hardens.  These voids are one of the sources of water leakage inside your house or building.  It also contributes to concrete cracks due to corrosion of steel reinforcement bars.

So, one of the steps in concrete roof repairs is to inspect for water leakage marks on the ceiling or underside of your concrete roof slab.  Water leakage often happens on concrete flat roof.  A concrete flat roof can cause ponding of rain water because there is no gradient on such roof to allow fast removal of water to the drains.

After carrying out any concrete roof repairs, you must conduct roof leaks repairs.  This is to ensure the concrete roof repair will last longer and to prevent rain water leakage.  However there are many types of roof leaks repairs that depend on the type of roof construction. So look out for my new post on this topic.
