What Is Steel Surface Preparation?

Some of you may be wondering what steel surface preparation is and why it is important in concrete roof repairs.  It was briefly described in my previous post as cleaning the rusted steel reinforcement bars.  Steel surface preparation is related to cleaning of rusted steel reinforcement bars.

It is important to do clean them thoroughly and all around the circumference of the bars without leaving any rust.  The surface area behind the rusted bars is often overlooked in concrete roof repairs.  This is one of the factors that contributes to concrete cracks and concrete spalling after a few months of completing the concrete roof repair.

The steel reinforcement bars need to be cleaned so that the next treatment or concrete repair product can bond well with the bars including their whole circumference and the parent concrete behind the bars.  Proper cleaning prevents concrete spalling in future.

Cleaning of steel reinforcement bars manually takes time when the area of concrete roof repair is large.  Another option is to clean these corroded bars using mechanical equipments.
